A word of caution though: PhotoRec is no-frills with respect to user interface. Other software I tried either failed to recover anything beyond a handful of files or they failed to recognize the files (Pentax DNG files) properly and only recovered the 100kb thumbnails from the RAW images. The software also worked faster than other alternatives (including a commercial program I purchased once in desperation). I was able to recover all of my files using PhotoRec, including files I had previously deleted from the SD card several months before. By far the best software I have used is which is open source and part of a package that can recover damaged disks more generally. I've had to recover files from SD cards on a couple of occasions (once due to USB crash corrupting my SD card and once due to personal incompetence).
